BIOGRAPHY
A multi-lingual, bi-racial, world-travelled, book devourer, Mai Ling has a background in broadcast media, narration, writing, editing and marketing, and as a true 3rd culture kid she has a unique ability to fully morph into different characters, adopt genuine accents, and borrow from a lifetime of human experience. During her career break, she smashed the proverbial 10,000 hours reading to ruthless critics (her kids) every night for 10 years and is still going strong. Mai Ling’s passion is voicing children’s audiobooks and narrating non-fiction and travel books. She resides in Australia with her 2 sons and husband.

Gender: Female Location: Australia Description of voice: - Mai Ling's natural (narrator) voice is a highly-relatable British neutral accent of low female tones. - Her voice is warm and friendly, the kind her friend's say they could "listen to for hours". - It is professional yet easy-on-the-ear, with a unique energy that can be dialled up and down to suit. - Her diction is also exceptionally clear thanks to years of reading educational texts for foreign students. Sounding Age(s): 5 - 10, 11 - 16, 17 - 20, 21 - 30, 31 - 40, 41 - 50, 51 - 60 Languages: English (Australian), English (International), English (Neutral), English (UK), French, Italian, Japanese, Spanish Accents: Although her main accent is British (international), Mai Ling has the ability to voice genuine-sounding accents by simply being in the company of a native speaker with that accent for a short period of time. Mai Ling can also voice a genuine "local" English accent found in countries I have lived in including Kenya, Japan, Italy, Spain, India, Philippines and Australia without it sounding exaggerated or stereotyped. SKILLS
Early History - Performing Arts | - From an early age I was involved in musical theatre, solo singing and poetry recitals - winning national awards. - I also trained in classical piano and music theory. - I am trained in public speaking and joined the Cambridge Footlights as an undergraduate. |
Story Telling - Children's Literature | Converting my own love of reading into building little readers was not easy task. I have read to my 2 young children (now 8 and 10), nightly covering a massive genre of books from Dr Seuss to Roald Dahl and JK Rowling to Tolkien. My kids are my most ruthless critics, making sure the characters are consistent from night to night or even on re-reads years apart. They don't forget and they don't forgive. Their absolute love of storytelling is my personal success story. |
Later Life - Voice Over | Professionally, I was a television producer for a live cross-over Japanese Breakfast show and regularly did VO for sports documentaries and dubbing translation for news magazine shows in Hong Kong. In Japan, I regularly voiced educational texts for English literacy exams. As a recent talent for Booktrack, I have the pleasure of working on many different genres of literature. |
